Chinese Buisnessman Zhang Zhirong Keeps Billionaire Standing Amid Latest Bad News

The last time billionaire Zhang Zhirong made major international headlines was last October after a company he controls settled a U.S. insider trading case in connection with Chinese government-controlled Cnooc Cnooc?s purchase of Canadian energy firm Nexen Nexen. ??Zhang afterward gave up the chairmanship of his two major listed companies, shipbuilder China Rongsheng and real estate developer Glorious Property, to ?devote more time to his personal endeavors.?

Problems at China Rongsheng, where he still owns a 29% stake, have Zhang back in the news. Shares in the Hong Kong-traded company have plunged 31% since July 2. China Rongsheng, facing slack demand for ships, on July 4 projected a loss for the first half of 2013 and confirmed some job cuts.

On Thursday, shareholders got some relief when China Rongsheng rose for the first time since July 2, but it fell 1.2% again on Friday. Buyers are hoping that the company can find financial support from ?the Chinese government.? China Rongsheng?s efforts to diversify business beyond shipbuilding haven?t been successful fast enough to offset the drag from its core business.

At least Zhang can take heart that he isn?t likely to lose his billionaire standing anytime soon. His stake in real estate developer Glorious and disposals of shares in his listed companies over the years will keep him well over that level. ?Among those sales, Zhang in January sold a 7% stake in China Rongsheng to current chairman Chen Qiang.

?Zhang ranked No. 736 on the 2013 Forbes Billionaires List released in March with wealth of $2 billion.

Echolocation For Your Cell Phone

It would be cool to have something like this in my fishing boat where instead of a dot on the screen I could get something that tells me where the fish are and what kind too.:-)

At what point do you stop cheating and start fishing? What's so wrong with having intuition about where the fish are? There are plenty of tell-tale signs that would give you clues to where the fish are hiding.

I admit, I don't boat fish because it's absolutely way too boring. I prefer walking up the mountain river, pickup up river stones to see what bugs are underneath. Maybe boat fishing is just too different an animal that my tactics would not adapt well, but I doubt it. With enough experience, I am posit

West rebukes Putin over Syria before G8 meeting

ENNISKILLEN, Northern Ireland (Reuters) - Western leaders rebuked Russian President Vladimir Putin for supporting Syria's Bashar al-Assad in his battle to crush an uprising, setting the stage for what could be a tense two-day G8 summit. U.S. President Barack Obama is expected to use his first face-to-face meeting with Putin in a year to try to convince the Kremlin chief to bring Assad to the negotiating table to end the two-year-old conflict.

Turkey could deploy army to quell protests

ANKARA/ISTANBUL (Reuters) - Turkey's deputy prime minister said on Monday the armed forces could be called up if needed to help quell popular protests that have swept Turkish cities in the last two weeks, the first time the possibility of a military role has been raised. Bulent Arinc made the remarks in Ankara, where 1,000 striking trade union workers faced off briefly against police backed by several water cannon, before police retreated and the crowd dispersed.

NSA leaker Snowden says no chance of fair trial in U.S.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Edward Snowden, the former National Security Agency contractor who exposed the U.S. government's secret phone and Internet surveillance programs, said in an online forum on Monday that he could not get a fair trial in the United States. "The U.S. government, just as they did with other whistleblowers, immediately and predictably destroyed any possibility of a fair trial at home, openly declaring me guilty of treason and that the disclosure of secret, criminal and even unconstitutional acts is an unforgivable crime. That's not justice," he said on the Guardian newspaper website.

Putin, Obama face off over Syria; rebels get Saudi missiles

ENISKILLEN, Northern Ireland/DUBAI (Reuters) - Rebels fought to halt an advance by President Bashar al-Assad's forces into northern Syria on Monday while U.S. President Barack Obama faced a showdown with Russia's Vladimir Putin over Obama's decision last week to arm the insurgents. New evidence emerged of escalating foreign support for the rebels, with a Gulf source telling Reuters that Saudi Arabia had equipped fighters for the first time with shoulder-fired anti-aircraft missiles, their most urgent request. Rebels said Riyadh had also sent them anti-tank missiles.

Iran's Rohani hopes all will seize chance of friendly ties

DUBAI (Reuters) - President-elect Hassan Rohani held out the prospect on Monday of better relations between Iran and the world, including the United States, and progress on resolving the nuclear dispute. But the moderate cleric who scored a surprise election victory on Friday insisted Washington and the West must recognize what he said was Tehran's right to enrich uranium, not interfere in Iran's internal affairs and end their hostility.

Portuguese teachers boycott exams in anti-austerity strike

LISBON (Reuters) - Thousands of teachers across Portugal walked away from final exams held at secondary schools on Monday to protest against planned spending cuts in education, leaving many pupils unable to take the tests, unions said. The cuts are among the most recent austerity measures proposed by Portugal's center-right administration to meet the fiscal targets of an EU/IMF bailout. Portugal is in the third year of its worst economic recession since the 1970s and unemployment is at a record 18 percent.

AU commission chief says up to Zimbabwe to sort out election row

GENEVA (Reuters) - Zimbabweans themselves must resolve a row over President Robert Mugabe's decision to call an election on July 31, the head of the African Union commission said on Monday. Zimbabwe's Constitutional Court ordered Mugabe two weeks ago to hold the poll by the end of July, but Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai has rejected his rival's declaration, saying it was too early and accusing him of creating a political crisis.

Protests to give new turn to Egypt revolution

CAIRO (Reuters) - Does Egypt face a new revolution? Millions hope so, it seems; they have signed a national petition demanding the president resign and plan to take to the streets on June 30, when Mohamed Mursi marks a year in office.

Indonesia MPs approve package paving way for fuel price hike

JAKARTA (Reuters) - Indonesia's parliament approved compensation measures for the poor on Monday that the government has demanded before it would agree to cut costly fuel price subsidies which are blamed for undermining confidence in Southeast Asia's biggest economy. The decision to raise fuel prices, by an average 33 percent, rests with President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono. Government officials have repeatedly stated that the price rises would follow shortly after the parliamentary decision.

Bulgarian PM vows transparency on security chief issue

SOFIA (Reuters) - Bulgaria's prime minister pledged on Monday to seek wide public support in picking a new head of state security after street protests forced the two-week old Socialist-led government to ditch its original candidate. Thousands of Bulgarians rallied to demand the government's resignation after it named a powerful media figure to the highly sensitive post without debate, a move critics said showed the lack of transparency in the European Union's poorest country.

(AP) ? A Turkish activist says protesters have agreed to press on with their 2-week-long sit-in at a cherished Istanbul park, despite government appeals and warnings for the standoff with authorities to end.

Tayfun Kahraman made the comment to The Associated Press on Saturday after a series of discussions among protesters in Gezi Park to decide on their next move.

He was one of two activists in Taksim Solidarity, an umbrella group of protest movements, who had met with Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan a day earlier.

Tom Cruise's best role: Maverick or Maguire?

By Gael Fashingbauer Cooper, TODAY

Maverick, or Jerry Maguire? The toothy "Top Gun" pilot, or the toothy sports agent who wants to show Cuba Gooding Jr. the money?

Tom Cruise in "Jerry Maguire," at left, and "Top Gun."

?

Tom Cruise has been playing heroes and hunks since the 1980s -- it's as natural to him as the daily commute is to us. He'll tackle another role this week, playing drone repairman Jack Harper in the futuristic world of a shattered Earth in the new movie "Oblivion."

But what's his #1 best role, the iconic character that simply screams Cruise? Let's run through the contenders.

Jon Furniss / AP

Early roles: Sometimes you just have to say ...
Sometimes, a first encounter never fades. Cruise had roles in "Taps," "The Outsiders," "All the Right Moves" and even "Endless Love" before he hit it big as high-schooler Joel Goodson in "Risky Business." But there's no doubt that it was Joel, with his Ray-Bans and his encounter with Guido the Killer Pimp, who cemented the image of Cruise as a handsome smoothie with charm to spare.

Serious drama, from brothers in arms to a new brother
Cruise didn't just reach for the easy, crowd-pleasing roles -- sometimes he played men who were struggling, internally and externally. In "Rain Man," he played car dealer Charlie Babbitt, who must come to terms with the autistic brother (Dustin Hoffman) he never knew. In "Born on the Fourth of July," he hid his magazine-cover looks to portray Vietnam vet Ron Kovic, confined to a wheelchair and disillusioned by the war he fought. And in "Magnolia," Cruise was nominated for an Oscar for the role of Frank, written especially for him by Paul Thomas Anderson. In his dramatic roles, Cruise found a new path -- the handsome guy who has to fall down before he can get up again stronger and smarter.

Poking fun at himself?
Is that Tom Cruise? Really? The star proved he could laugh at himself, and steal every scene he was in, when he played balding, dumpy Les Grossman ?in "Tropic Thunder." This image will never be the first mental picture we keep of Cruise, but it went a long way towards bringing back some fans who'd been turned off by the actor thanks to his Oprah couch-jumping and other public missteps. (Watch Grossman's famed dance here, note explicit lyrics in background.)

Action hero
There's no question Cruise looks like an action hero -- all except for his 5-foot-something height. But he measured up when he took on the "Mission: Impossible" franchise and the role of Ethan Hunt. Cruise especially shone in the sequel, "Mission: Impossible -- Ghost Protocol," which featured some terrifying stunts off the world's tallest building, Dubai's?Burj Khalifa. And Cruise acquitted himself admirably as drifter hero "Jack Reacher" in the 2012 film based on Lee Child's books, although his height was an issue to fans of Child's novels, in which Reacher's height is a big part of his character.

Maverick vs. Maguire
Yet when it comes right down to it, two roles rise above the rest.

In 1986's?"Top Gun," Cruise's model looks and boyish charm helped him create headstrong Maverick, the naval aviator with the need for speed. A tragedy involving a friend shakes his world, but he battles back, with the help of new love Charlie (Kelly McGillis) and unexpected friendship from an unlikely corner (Val Kilmer's Iceman). In a way, the Maverick role was everything Cruise did best -- he was handsome, daring, reckless, beaten down by tragedy and resurrected by courage under fire. It's hard not to hear Cruise's name and picture the cocky thumbs-up pose from the "Top Gun" poster.

But a full decade later, Cruise took on the title role in "Jerry Maguire," and while he was just as cocky and handsome as ever, something had changed. This was a more adult Cruise, breaking out on his own as a sports agent due to a sudden attack of conscience. Cruise managed not one, not two, but three strong relationships in this film. Cuba Gooding Jr. demanded Cruise "show him the money," Renee Zellweger assured him "you had me at hello," and little Jonathan Lipnicki brought out his fatherly instincts.

Would Maverick have turned into Jerry Maguire 10 years down the line, with a different career under his belt and a little boy in his life? Maybe. Cruise is nothing if not consistent, and his roles, from the self-parodying Les Grossman to the boyish Joel Goodson, always somehow reflect the movie star and the man. Vote and tell us if Maverick, Jerry Maguire, or another role is Cruise's absolute best.

Exclusive: SocGen mulls up to 700 job cuts ? union sources

By Editor - Fri Apr 05, 5:04 pm

By Lionel Laurent and Matthias Blamont PARIS (Reuters) ? French bank Societe Generale may cut between 600 and 700 jobs as part of a broader cost-cutting drive in the face of stagnant growth in its home market, three union sources told Reuters on Friday. SocGen management met with unions on Wednesday to discuss the proposals, which have not yet been finalized, the sources said. The cuts, which will largely target back office staff in IT and compliance roles, will be partly offset by up to 100 new jobs created elsewhere, they added. ?
